CALLBACK (2016) by Carles Torras
“You feeling tired? Feeling down?”
A winter cold morning, Babel Cinemas in Valencia, some people, me among in their, wait in front of the doors. Preview and press pass with the director Carles Torras y the actor Timothy Gibbs.
In “Petit comité” we could enjoy of this projection. Larry (a magnificent Martin Bacigalupo), an evangelical, Hispanic emigrant, is eager of fitinng in the American society. He wants to live the American dream while he lives poorly working in a moving company. But he wants to be an actor. Everything brusts when he rents a room to a gril, like a soap bubble.
It is a surprising way to introduce each character, each one is a clichè, each one is in him setting. It is fot this that the spectator can recognize to everybody. The girl (Lilli Stein), the boss (Larry Fessenden), the evangelical preacher (Timothy Gibbs), salesperson of the fast food shop (Dave Bobb) and… Larry, the loser. But there are two characters more, New Yor city, its periphery, the working-class neighbourhood, as grey as its citizens. There isn’t glamour. It is a different New York, it isn’t cozy or hopeful. It is a hostile and indifferent city. And the train, the train pass near of the Larry’s house. It barges in the scenes, it cuts the action, separates the scenes and lights sometimes. And also the train is the real soundtack and make a more despirited the atmosphere.
It is good drawn portrait about a loser. He is bring t the limit. There are a lot of novels and movies about the misfits, about emigrants in United States but this is the most stark and cruel. The movie reflects the Carles Torras’s visión about this country. The way thas the American people are alwys smiling, their exaggerated kindness, is this produced by the cinema or is the American citizen’s who imposed this in the American cinema? The director also asked this to himself in the press pass.
I can give you two good reasons for watch his film: because show very well the B face of New York and its citizens and because it so nice watch how someone make something great with scarce resources.
