THE OPEN DOOR (LA PUERTA ABIERTA) (2016) by Marina Seresesky
“You’re so bad, bad and bitter… and a whore”
When you are in front of a opened door you feel hope, ¿in what? In everything that you think there are behind the door. This movie is about that, the hope, about we mustn’t lose the hope. Like one of the its principal actors said.
Behind “The opened door” we find with Rosa, a protitute. She inherited the jod from her mother. She live with her, Antonia, but Antonia is ill and for this reason she think that she is a very famous movie star. One day a new member wil arrive at her family and everything will change forever. This is like a tragedy but…not more far of this, we are in front of one of the most perfect Spanish tragicomedy of this last years. It is like if Ramon Maria del Valle-Inclan and Alex de la Iglesia had written together. Marina Saresesky, director and scriptwriter, takes us between the guffaw and the sorrow. This happen like something natural. For that we don’t realise about the grotesque is the story. It is like a Christmas tale with a big typical Spanish humor black humor dose. You can laugh but if you think in the story you will realize that it is very sad.
Every actor in this movie contribute with warmth and humor. They live in a typical Madrilenian “corrala”. They get that this “corrala” become a another character more in the film.
If you think that this is not enoug for you feel like your heart is expanded and shrinked, like Asier, one of its actors said. The soundtrak is very beautifull. It is a Sapanish songs and the most relevan is “Fantasia” sung by Sara Montiel. This song opens and closes the movie, like a fantasy, like the story.
I could speak with one of the principal actors, Asier Etxeandia, and its director, Marina Saresesky. They told me about how important is this film for them. When I asked about how difficult or easy was get money for make the movie…”very difficul” she said, and she makes sad. But both persevered in one word, Hope. Hope is a word that support all movie, all Rosa’s life, all Spanish cinema. People that work in cinema, music art in general have to fight with the incomprehension not only of the society if not of the government too. But Asier persever “the culture is necessary for I can empathize with you, with everybody”. Now, we can make like at the moment we are on Christmas time, we can make a wish, we can ask for more movies like this.
